Matrix models at large N

As explained in the previous lectures, via localization techniques, the free energy of ABJM theory in three-sphere is reduced to a matrix model integral. In the lecture, I will explain some basic facts of matrix model, and the plan is to cover the following materials: (1) some introduction and background of matrix model and its connection to several problems; (2) the formulation of matrix model and its simplification in the large N limit; (3) a relatively detailed study of the so-called one-cut solution; (4) back to ABJM theory, a brief account of the non-perturbative planar free energy obtained by solving the corresponding matrix model. We will mainly follow section 7 and 8 of Marino’s lecture 1104.0783. For further details of matrix model one may also look at Marino’s another lecture hep-th/0410165 and references therein.
