DESCRIPTION:We give an introduction to Kac-Moody algebras and the theory of
  non-linear realisations. We show that the non-linear realisation of the s
 emi-direct product of E11 and its vector representation contains all the m
 aximal supergravities. This single unified theory can be thought of as the
  low energy effective action for strings and branes. Some of the new effec
 ts it contains will be discussed.
