SUMMARY:QFT Colloquium: Ira Rothstein (Carnegie Mellon) -
DESCRIPTION:Announcing the QFT Colloquium on Wednesday\, 10 June\, at 13:30
 \, at room 1.221 (CSMB building)\, Zum Großen Windkanal 2\, 12489 Berlin.
\n\nProf. Ira Rothstein (Carnegie Mellon University)\n\nTitel: A unified
approach to the self force problem\n\nAbstract: The self force problem is
ubiquitous in astrophysics and cosmology. It is defined by the following s
ituation. An object moves in contact with an external system (S)\, which m
ay or may not break Poincare invariance.  The motion of the object deform
s S which then back-reacts on the particle and changes its dynamics. When
S is Poincare invariant (no medium)  this back reaction is called "Radiat
ion Reaction Forces" while when it S violates this symmetry it is called
(incompletely) "Dynamical Friction".   In addition\, a symmetry breaki
ng medium leads to accretion of mass which can be a leading order effect.\
n\nIn this talk I will introduce an effective field theory which generaliz
es the case of the vacuum to a medium. This theory turns out to have an in
teresting renormalization group flow in the context of the Schwinger Keldy
sh formalism and allows one to calculate in a systematic way  all of the
above-mentioned effects for any choice of S.
