Title: Symmetries from Extra Dimensions and String Corrections to Supergravity
Abstract:
String theory predicts an infinite series of higher-derivative corrections to supergravity, governed by powers of the inverse string tension, α′. Understanding these corrections and their interplay with string dualities is essential for uncovering the structure of the effective theory beyond the leading order. In the context of toroidal compactifications, remarkable progress has been achieved by exploiting the enhanced symmetry structure of the lower-dimensional theories. In this talk, I will present a novel approach [arXiv:2410.07325], showing that certain symmetries of the higher-dimensional theory which appear to be broken under dimensional reduction can, in fact, be realized as a global symmetry with constrained parameters in the reduced theory. This principle tightly constrains the allowed couplings and provides a new organizing framework for α′-corrections in supergravity.
