The sigma model describing strings in AdS is integrable and commonly a spectral parameter is introduced in the mathematical description to write down string solutions and towers of conserved charges. In this talk, we give a geometric interpretation of the spectral parameter. In fact, we discuss a nonlocal symmetry of general symmetric space sigma models that generates the spectral parameter.
