Integrability of the AdS_5 x S^5 string has proven to be remarkably powerful in developing our understanding of the AdS/CFT correspondence and in describing N=4 SYM at finite coupling. This ongoing success has motivated people to look for other, less manifestly symmetric, instances of integrability in AdS/CFT. In my talk I will focus on integrable deformations of the AdS_5 x S^5 string sigma model. The most “serious” such deformation is a so-called q deformation, whose interpretation in string theory and AdS/CFT is rather mysterious. I will discuss two types of nontrivial “undeformed” limits of this q deformed AdS_5 x S^5 “string” where I can say (much) more. The first of these is a q deformation of the flat space string, with a close relation to the so-called mirror model that plays an important role throughout integrability in AdS/CFT. The second of these are so-called twisted models, containing backgrounds such as e.g. the Lunin-Maldacena background dual to beta deformed SYM. This second type also contains many new types of deformations, which were mostly lacking a clear string theory and AdS/CFT interpretation. I will discuss these theories from a unified perspective, discuss aspects of their string theory interpretation, conjecture AdS/CFT duals for all of them (modulo subtleties I will discuss), and “verify” this conjecture in some nontrivial cases. The dual field theories are various noncommutative versions of N=4 SYM. I will aim to give a pedagogical talk, skipping any unnecessary details.
